|At Autumn's Harvest Farm we predominantly raise Murray Grey cattle. We got started with the Murray Greys in 2009 shortly after meeting Ernest Woods. Ernest spoke very highly about every aspect of the Murray Greys (a breed I knew little about). Ernest discussed their sturdiness, weight gaining abilities, calving ease and a number of other positive attributes that made them an excellent choice. Shortly after meeting Ernest I visited his farm and was in awe of these well-conditioned, very loved Silver cows grazing his mountainside farm. I also found it astonishing that Ernest could walk up and pet each of his cows/calves in the field. This was new to me as many of my cows wouldn't allow me within 10 feet of them, and I needed a bodyguard to go near their calves. I immediately bought a bull, and eventually purchased the whole herd when Ernest retired.
After purchasing the first bull we were hooked on the Murray Greys. We found their forgiving nature made them the perfect match for two first generation farmers getting into the cattle business. We have also found them to be one of only a few breeds that finish well on a forage based diet. After butchering our first Murray Grey steer it became apparent why Murray Greys dominate carcass competitions throughout Australia and the rest of the world.
After raising several other breeds we feel fortunate to be raising Murray Greys. Murray Greys are the most efficient, easy keeping cattle that we have worked with. They are docile, they are easy to handle and have superior maternal instincts. Their meat is tender and well marbled. In 2008 at the Midland Bull test a Murray Grey bull scored a perfect 10 on the genetic test for marbling and a perfect 9 on the genetic test for tenderness. No bull of any breed has ever performed so well
Throughout the last several years we have worked tirelessly on developing consistent high grading carcasses. We are constantly working to improve an already superior product through our breeding program. All of the cattle on our farm are raised on pasture. Our beef is Animal Welfare Approved grass-fed beef. Eating grass, legumes and herbs is the natural way for cattle. Raising cattle on pasture creates a truly superior eating experience. Meat from pastured raised cattle has less total fat, less saturated fat, less cholesterol and fewer calories. It has more vitamin A, more vitamin E, and more beta-carotene. More importantly, the meat has two health-promoting fats called omega-3 fatty acids and "conjugated linoleic acid," or CLA.
Murray Grey cattle can add value to any type of beef program. If you would like to see our Murray Greys we welcome visitors by appointment. Please feel free to call or email with any questions.
