Kangal Dog

Autumn's Harvest Farm is a farm that started as a dream in a tiny little house my wife rented with six little chicks from one of the local feed stores. At the time I was working on completely remodeling a farm house that would soon be our home (in hindsight it would have been easier to tear it down). We had no intentions of becoming full time farmers, we were just looking for a simpler way of life. We literally started from nothing, no land, no money and most importantly no experience. I am telling you this little bit of Autumn's Harvest Farm history because during the lean years of starting a farm from scratch every penny counts and every animal is like a family member. The emotional toll losing animals takes on a person is absolutely heartbreaking and predator control is a must.

After eleven years of being both financially and emotionally devastated by predator loss we decided that it was time to look into a livestock guardian dog. We then spent roughly six months researching breeds, breeders and saving for this newest addition to our ever growing farm and family. After hours upon hours of educating ourselves, talking to breeders and visiting farms we finally settled on the Turkish Kangal. We chose the Kangal because of their size, speed and ability to protect their flocks against a variety of different predators. The particular line we chose is know for extreme gentleness and protectiveness with children and small animals making them a perfect fit for protecting our very diverse family of animals and people.

The Kangal is the national dog of turkey and is even featured on their stamp. They have an average lifespans of 12 - 15 years. They are a large dog with females averaging 90 lbs - 110 lbs and males reaching weights upward of 150 lbs. They are large enough to intimidate or kill predators, withstand extreme weather, and bond with the animals they are protecting. All of our breeding animals must prove themselves both in the field and show excellent interactions with my children. Kangals are being used all over the world protecting their flocks from wolves, bears, coyotes and many other predators. Please feel free to e-mail for more info.
